Empowering St. Pete with vehicle donations for vital benefits.

Our mission, our story, and why this work matters locally.

How we started

In the heart of St. Petersburg, Gulf Wheels was born out of a passion for community and support. The founders noticed that many neighbors were eligible for crucial benefits, such as SNAP and Florida KidCare, yet remained unenrolled due to a lack of awareness or resources. It became clear that there was a gap in access to information that these families needed to thrive.

With vehicles representing a significant asset for many, the idea of transforming car donations into a funding mechanism emerged. Each donated vehicle would not only support our operational costs but also fuel our mission of connecting local residents to essential programs. Thus, Gulf Wheels took shape, dedicated to ensuring that every St. Petersburg resident has the opportunity to access the benefits they deserve.

Our mission

At Gulf Wheels, our mission is to bridge the gap between eligible neighbors and essential support systems. By focusing on local programs like Florida Medicaid, Temporary Cash Assistance, WIC, and LIHEAP, we aim to empower every resident in St. Petersburg. Together, we can ensure that no one goes without the benefits they need, fostering a stronger and healthier community for all.

What we stand for

Radical Transparency

We believe in being open about our processes and funding. Donors and beneficiaries alike deserve to know how resources are allocated and to see the impact of their contributions.

Zero-Fee Pickup

Every vehicle donation is picked up at no cost to the donor. We want to make the process easy and worthwhile for those who are helping their neighbors.

Local-First Research

Our focus is solely on the St. Petersburg community. We prioritize programs and benefits that directly impact our residents and enhance their quality of life.

Dignity in Every Interaction

We treat everyone with respect and empathy. It’s important that all interactions reflect our commitment to uplifting each member of our community.

Our principles

Why this city

St. Petersburg is a vibrant city, rich in diversity and culture, but it also faces significant enrollment gaps in benefits programs. Neighborhoods like Childs Park and Midtown have populations that often remain unaware of the resources available to them. With a growing demographic of families in need, many are eligible for programs like WIC and LIHEAP but are not signed up. Gulf Wheels aims to change this by facilitating connections and ensuring that our local residents can easily access the help they deserve.

If you have a vehicle you no longer need, consider donating it to Gulf Wheels. Your contribution will directly help our St. Petersburg neighbors access vital benefits. Alternatively, if you’re looking for assistance, explore our free benefits finder to connect with the programs that can support you and your family today.
